GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP

Global citizenship is all about understanding where other people are coming from and integrating yourself between people of different origins. People who grew up in different cultures, with different way of life also have different views on things and different ways of doing things in their daily life. Thus, it is important to understand and be aware of global diversity. This means to look past stereotypes and generalizations. This is important because the world we live in right now is very diverse, so in order to success we have to be adaptable among people from different origins.

In the Honors Program at MSU Mankato, I have learned the importance of Global Citizenship. It helped me reflect on all my experiences so far living in 4 different countries and having friends from 6 out of 7 continents. That enabled me to mold it into knowledge that I can use in the future. I also went to a lot of cultural and international events held in our college, which helped me become more of a global citizen. An essay regarding my expereince with Global citizenship and two journals reflecting on events I visited to here in MSU Mankato are attached below.

Being Exposed to a diverse culture student body since the beginning of my college life has very much helped me master my global citizenship skills. Spending a semester in West Virginia, living with an Arab roommate and on a floor with majority of African-American students was in itself a big learning opportunity/ After that, moving to a university in Minnesota with even more diverse population and being in the Honors program at the same time really forced me to get out of my bubble and forced me to explore other cultures.

While already being so immersed in diversity, in Spring of 2017, I volunteered as an Orientation Peer Mentor, where I helped new incoming international students to get registered and helped them around with their first few days in the university, and for some, their first days in the country! Doing so, I got to learn a tremendous about of things, cultural differences, ways people from different cultures think, how they interact, what they find interesting, what they find hard and confusing, etc. These all were first-hand information that I would never have been able to gather through books and research alone. I've made some lifelong friends by doing this.

Our world currently is a melting pot. Every country depends on some other country for either business, trade, health services, entertainment, etc. Having such an advanced level of understanding of Global Citizenship has prepared me for any kind of professional or non-professional situations that I might have to face in the future.
